Goose and Gander

"Whats good for the goose, is good for the gander" that's the expression females chant when they are oppressed by men and that's the expression that men also chant when their misogynistic instincts kick in. I'm not here to just talk about the disparity in gender roles. I'm here to talk about the beautiful phenomenon that is 'Double Standards'. We see it everyday, some of us have been victims. It happens in virtually all ramifications of life. What are double standards? a rule or principle which is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups. People are treated with double standards, based on their sex, race, skin color, religious beliefs. Okay, let's take a look at various instances where double standards play out.

The Genders: Men and women haven't always had the same treatment since the beginning. From duties of the genders, to behaviors expected of the genders. Men who show emotions in public are often seen as weak, but when women do it, it's normal. When a man takes charge at work, he's a fantastic leader, when a woman does it, she's bossy and unapproachable.
Even from very young ages, when a boy plays rough and is constituting a nuisance, it's termed as 'boys being boys', but God-forbid a girl child thinks about trying it, Shes going to be referred to as boyish and lacking in proper home training. A woman with multiple sex partners is a whore. Male version; conqueror . If a man hits a woman, he's an abuser, if a woman hits a man, she's a strong woman standing up for herself. If a man and a woman are both intoxicated and accidentally have sex, the man is blamed for taking things far. Men aren't allowed to express their admiration for other male counterparts without being referred to as gay. Men also are almost instantly seen as the monsters when a relationship ends. People almost instantly dismiss male claims of sexual harassment, saying things like "But, you enjoyed it". If it was a woman in that situation, we might at the brink of WWIII. Women from all corners of the world would rise to her aid. When a female gets raped, she was asking for it, she didn't dress appropriate enough or was just stupid, the rapist is never held accountable for his sexual urges. Men are expected to be rich and marry a pretty lady who'd make a great trophy wife. Women, every step of the way are reminded that,"marriage is the ultimate",  irrespective of their achievements, they will eventually be relegated to a kitchen and the 'other room' . I  could go on and on. You might find yourself saying "This is 2018, people don't do this anymore" Honey, you'd be surprised we still have people who think like this, some of them are world leaders.

Race and Skin Color:  When a mass shooting happens, the head line is highly dependent on the color of the shooter. White man; Mentally ill loner... .  Black man; xyz people were victims in gang related violence... . Middle Eastern; Islamists strike again and xyz people lost their ...  . White Cop kills an unarmed black man/child; National Hero felt threatened by... . The sentences of  offenders vary based of their race, often times because people of color never get good quality representation in court. Qualified people have been denied jobs based on skin color. In certain african countries, white people are held in higher esteem than their fellow africans. People who have slightly Caucasian traits are sometimes preferred to full blacks. Even among black people, light skinned blacks are given better treatment that blacks richer in melanin

Within Genders: Among girls, we are judged based on our eating habits, fashion preferences, body shapes and sexual experiences. This translates to how we are addressed and treated. Let's take for instance, I ( a very curvy female) am [by society standards] not allowed to wear certain things, such as shorts, playsuits, pencil skirts etc. Simply because it's too distracting. There are many times, I have worn the exact same things or less revealing things than skinner people. I got dress coded, they didn't. I've been told my hips weren't compliant in Covenant University. Or even when it comes to eating, I'm expected to eat tiny servings because of my size, irrespective of my daily calorie requirement. When I eat like a normal person, things like "Ah, you're not watching your weight" but if a skinny person overeats, she's applauded and things like "At least you're eating" are said. Among males, if a man doesn't like eating much or enjoys cooking or just enjoys helping out his wife, his masculinity is questioned and he's mocked. (I'm not male, so I don't really know your own double standards. Please drop them in the comment session )

I could go on and on, double standards happen everywhere, they happen based on your financial strata or something as 'minor' as the way you speak or something as uncontrollable your face.

Do you think we can eradicate double standards? Have you been a victim of double standards?
