"Okay, just five more minutes twice" She thought as she listened to her lecturer drone on. She was having quite a long day and she just wanted to try her new activity for the day and sleep.
Yeah, Laura had a rule to try always something new everyday. Two days ago, she ordered a pizza with the strangest combination of toppings from the pizzeria around the corner, that opened just a few days ago. Yesterday, she walked a new route home. Today, she had no clue what she wanted to do. She was so tired. "Don't forget to prepare for your test next week" The words of her lecturer jolted her back to reality and she walked out of the classroom and visualized her bed.
She felt someone hit her and she felt her books leave her hands. She let out a groan and bent to start picking her books. She got a whiff of a really amazing scent and she whipped her head upward to identify the source of the smell. She saw dark muscular arms grab her books. She smiled politely and said Thank you. She got up to leave when the pretty but clumsy man stretched out his hand and said "I'm Kunle" "I'm Laura" she responded "You really should look where you're going, Mr Clumsy Pretty boy" she added. He laughed and responded with a "Yes ma". They said their Byes and they both left blushing.
She walked into her room with a smile on her face. "Biiiish" she said with so much excitement as she saw her roommate. " Wetin happen? You win money? " Laura responded. " No o. Na man I see. Babe, this boy fine. He looks amazing, muscular but not too much, his arms. Oh his hands. Guy, in fact, everything. Don' get me started on his smell. His perfume can jazz you". She laughed " Unfortunately, I can't date him, even if he was interested, can't be cliche" Her roommate rolled her eyes " Laura, people have rules; Don't drink, No sex on the first date, I don't pay for dates, always pray before a meal and so much more. Yours is 'Never be cliche' that's just wow. Nobody ever meets the love of their life by bumping into them and picking books anymore. So technically, it's not cliche" Laura laughed and responded. " I did, it probably still happens, hence cliche"
" WTF! Laura, you're really not going be my girlfriend because you're trying to not be cliche? Wow. I have legit seen it all" "Kunle, I like you and all, but It's my number one rule" Kunle sighed " Oya ask me to be your boyfriend" "Huh?" "That's not cliche Laura, so do it"
They lay on the beach, holding hands and stared at the sky. "Babe, why do you feel the need to not be cliche?" Laura sighed "Well Baby, people always saw me as a waste of everything. Not people, just my parents. I decided to never do things the conventional way, so they'd just think I'm crazy. That's easier" A deafening silence followed. Kunle broke the silence " Let's get married". Laura was quite confused "Uh, sure" she said.
"Laura, will you marry me?" He said, getting on one knee. She laughed and said Yes.
"Looking back, I have come to realise, that in my quest to not be cliche, I have lived the most cliche life ever. From marrying my highschool sweet heart who bumped into me in the hallway, to being a personnel manager who shattered the glass ceiling, to a Yoruba woman with 3 children and mother-in-law troubles" At this point, she started laughing. She smiled and held Kunle's hand. "Babe, Thank you for making me cliche"
Laura was happy and content. Her not so cliche life, was perfect.
