Quick Question; What exactly is a good career? Let's start from the basics. What is a career? A career is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress, a period of time can vary from 5 years to a lifetime.
The aim of almost half the things we do as young adults, is to get a good job, build a career and eventually have a great life. The pressure is always on to choose a good career; from your parents who advice you on your course of study and possible career choices, to your friends; whose choices unconsciously make you lean towards a certain career, to the career choices your role models or people around you have made, to YOU; either you want to be rich, happy or even both. Everybody and everything plays a role in your career path.
The thing is, sometimes, we never pay attention to all of these influences, early enough. We either only pay attention to our parents or our role models, or none at all. Sometimes, when we eventually take time to think about it, it's too late. We've spent some of the most productive years of our life studying a course we have little or no interest in or we have spent that time, jumping from idea to idea, joining the bandwagon and being jack of ALL trades, but masters of absolutely nothing.
When we eventually realize where our passion lies, we can't pursue them out of fear; fear of failure, fear that our career isn't productive enough or the fear instilled in us by the people around us. As a result, we give up. We let it all go and live the miserable versions of our lives, till one day, we reach that point. The point where can't take it anymore, the point where you choose to flirt with the wind and eventually follow your passion and make it a career because you really don't care what you lose. We all reach this point at different stages, age 35, age 25, age 60. No one ever really knows. The unfortunate thing is, some of us, never reach this point. Which makes us live our lives with the thought of what might have been.
And so, I ask again, "What is a good career?". In my opinion, a good career is any occupation you choose to excel in, without breaking any laws/rules and without infringing on other people's rights.
